Si bien el crédito es importante en los países latinos, probablemente no tenga el mismo peso que en Estados Unidos. Aquí las personas se conocen por su historial crediticio. Si usted es uno de los miles de inmigrantes que llegan a este país cada año, es importante que se informe acerca de la importancia de crear y mantener un excelente historial crediticio.
¿Cómo crear un historial de crédito?
Aún y cuando en su país de origen tenga su récord crediticio, en Estados Unidos deberá empezar desde cero. De allí que uno de los primeros pasos es abrir una cuenta corriente y si es posible una de ahorros. Trate de mantener la misma dirección y el mismo trabajo durante mucho tiempo, eso dirá de usted que es una persona estable. Una vez logrado esto, diríjase a una tienda por departamentos donde ofrezcan crédito y solicite uno.
Utilícelo, pero hágalo inteligentemente; es decir, pague puntualmente sus cuentas y procure cancelar esa deuda antes del tiempo establecido. Eso indicará que usted es una persona responsable. Si sus finanzas se lo permiten trate de tomar otro crédito, pero hágalo estando seguro de que no arruinará su presupuesto. Después intente obtener una tarjeta de crédito. Probablemente al principio su límite será bajo, pero dependiendo de su comportamiento como consumidor ese límite puede ir subiendo. No olvide hacer sus pagos puntualmente.
¿Para qué sirve tener crédito?
Seguramente su intención es permanecer en Estados Unidos, de allí que es importante crear un entorno favorable para su estabilidad económica. A medida que su límite de crédito va subiendo y usted laboriosamente trabaja en él, en esa misma medida se incrementan sus posibilidades de adquirir un vehículo o hasta una casa con los intereses bajos. Mientras más alto es su puntaje de crédito más bajo es el interés que paga por este tipo de bienes.
Al momento de visitar un dealer para comprar ese automóvil que tanto le gusta o una inmobiliaria para comprar la casa de sus sueños, una de las primeras cosas que revisarán -y la que más peso tendrá- será su historial crediticio, el tiempo que tenga en su actual trabajo, y por supuesto cuánto devenga al mes y cuánto tiene en gastos corrientes.
Sólo un mal récord crediticio puede impedir su crecimiento en este país. Es así como fue creada la Ley Equal Credit Reporting Act, la cual le prohíbe a los prestamistas (bancos, tiendas, tarjetas de crédito, agentes de bienes raíces) tomar sus decisiones basados en factores como el sexo, edad, religión o nacionalidad. Esté atento y formule su denuncia si piensa que ha sido objeto de este tipo de discriminación.
